Over recent years the potential of big data for government, for business, for society has excited much comment, debate and even evangelism. Described as the ‘new science’ with all the answers [1] or a paradigm destroying phenomena of enormous potential [2] big data are all the rage. Official statisticians, already with a long history of using non-survey data, which are often very large in terms of volume, must decide whether big data is really something new and useful or just hype. On the one hand, some argue that big data needs to be seen as an entirely new ecosystem comprising new data, new tools and methods [3]. Whereas others argue to the contrary that big data is just hype and that big data are just Data [4]. In deciding whether big data can be useful for official statistics, National Statistics Offices (NSOs) must keep the protection of confidential data at the top of their decision making tree.

Introduction: Located deep in the Himalayas, the cave of Amarnath is one of the holiest pilgrimage site for Hindus in general and Shiva followers in particular. It is regarded to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Because of high altitude, rough terrain, harsh weather, pilgrims are prone to many illnesses which sometimes these prove fatal.

Objective: To study the profile, pattern and outcome, among Shri Amarnath Ji yatri patients attending SKIMS in year 2017.

Methodology: A prospective study was carried out during the yatra period, all pilgrims of Shri Amarnath ji Yatra who were referred to SKIMS from July-August 2017 were studied and the patients were followed from admission till discharge. The profile, pattern and outcome of illness in Yatris attending Yatra in the year 2017 was compared with the results of year 2011 and 2015.

Results: Out of 97 patients received at SKIMS, 54(55.67%) were having minor ailments and were seen on OPD basis, 43(44.32%) were admitted. 32(74.41%) admitted were males at the time of arrival 14(32.5%) were Road traffic Accidents followed by 7 patients (16.27%) who were Acute Myocardial Infarction. Out of 43 admitted patients 36 (83.7%) patients improved, 1(2.32%) were discharged on request, 1(2.32%) was referred and 5(11.62%) expired.

Conclusion: Comparison of the present study with previous studies in year 2011 AND 2015 shows that the no. of injury patients had increased significantly in present study and RTA victims formed significant proportion of cases. In addition more number of patients had expired.

The recent development of next-generation sequencing has changed the way we carry out the molecular biology and genomic studies. It has allowed us to sequence a DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence at a significantly increased base coverage, as well as at a much faster rate [1]. This facilitates building an excellent platform for a whole genome sequencing, and for a variety of sequencing-based analyses, including gene expressions, mapping DNA-protein interactions, whole-transcriptome sequencing, and RNA (Ribonucleic acid) splicing profiles. For example, the RNA-Seq protocol [2], in which processed mRNA is converted to cDNA and then sequenced, is enabling the identification of previously unknown genes and alternative splice variants. The whole-genome sequencing of tumour cells can uncover previously unidentified cancer-initiating mutations.

An unprecedented revolution has been observed in science with recent technological advances, which have provided a large amount of “omic” data. The crescent generation and availability of this information available in public databases were, and still are, a challenge for professionals from different areas. However, what is the challenge? In biology, the main challenge is to make sense of the enormous amount of structural data and sequences that have been generated at multiple levels of biological systems. Still, in bioinformatics, development of tools is necessary (statistical and computational) capable of assisting in understanding the mechanisms underlying biological questions in the study. Besides, if we consider the complexity of science, this is a highly reductionist view. The era of a “new biology” emerges accompanied by the birth/development of other sciences, such as bioinformatics and computational biology, which have an integrated interface of molecular biology.

This study investigated the influence of students’ home activities on their academic performance in Economics in senior secondary school II in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. Three research questions were answered in the study and three null hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. The population of the study consisted of 1,130 senior secondary school II in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. A sample size of 113 students was adopted; this was 10 percent of the entire population. A 21 structured questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents (students). The questionnaire was face-validated by experts in Faculty of Education, University of Uyo. Cronbach’s Alpha Technique was used in determining the reliability of the instrument and a correlation coefficient of 0.76 was obtained.

In this paper, we present the application of an RGB-D camera in developing a travel aid for the blind or visually impaired people. The goal of the proposed travel aid is to provide the user with information about obstacles along the travelled path so he or she may walk safely and quickly in an unfamiliar environment. The performance of the travel aid greatly depends on whether the ground plane can be successfully detected. In this paper, we present a new approach to detecting the ground plane from a depth image. Two different experiments were designed to test the performance of the proposed travel aid.
